Cahal is a native of Northern Ireland where he studied law and undertook his Bar Exams. He was an Associate to the Honourable Justice Ryan of the Federal Court in Melbourne and has practised at the Victorian Bar since 1999. He has served on the Victorian Bar Council for three years. He has appeared in the Federal and Victoria Courts both as a trial and appellate advocate.
Cahal has a broad practice in administrative law, crime and family law. He has particular expertise in the intersection between administrative law and crime. He teaches administrative law and federal court practice. His recent cases have included committals, inquests, tribunal hearings, confiscation matters, privacy matters, judicial review and statutory construction matters.
