Professional Background
In Victoria Justin has appeared extensively in Supreme and County Court criminal trials and bail applications. He has also appeared in the Court of Appeal on numerous occasions. He appeared on behalf of Victoria Police in the 'Lawyer X' Royal Commission.
He also practises outside of Victoria. He has appeared in the Supreme Court of Tasmania Court of Criminal Appeal in Standage v Tasmania [2017] TASCCA 23 (2 November 2017)
He has appeared in the High Court in Diehm v Director of Public Prosecutions (Nauru) [2013] HCA 42 (30 October 2013).
He is experienced in Confiscation Act matters both in the drafting of applications and in courtroom advocacy.
Justin has undertaken the Australian Advocacy Institute’s teacher training program, and has regularly assisted with the Bar Readers' course.
Justin has served 12 terms on Bar Council since 2003. From 2018 until 2020 he was the Victorian Bar's representative and a director of the Law Council of Australia. He has previously served on the Bar Council Executive. He has served multiple terms on the committee of the Criminal Bar Association and has edited the CBA newsletter. He served on the Indictable Crime Certificate Committee.
Justin has been a leading counsel for Victoria Legal Aid's Trial Counsel Development Program since 2011.
Justin has been a member of Crockett Chambers since 2005 (www.crockett.com.au). He has been mentor to nine readers, namely Kier Dernelly, Deanna Caruso, Kelly McKay, Adrian Bates, Angela Wong, Samantha Holmes, Brett O'Sullivan, David Carolan and Joanne Poole.
Justin was a County Court Judge from 2020 until 2022.
